Who it's for

This is for the trader on Relief Road whose sales are close to the registration limit, the new company or LLP that needs a GSTIN before its first invoice, the consultant whose business clients ask for one, and the seller about to list on an online marketplace. In Gujarat, a business that supplies only goods must register once its aggregate turnover in a financial year crosses ₹40 lakh, and one that supplies services must register once it crosses ₹20 lakh. Some businesses must register before their first sale whatever the turnover, such as those selling goods to buyers in other states. We register proprietorships, partnership firms, LLPs and private limited companies.

What's included

  • A check of whether you must register now, can wait, or would gain from registering voluntarily, and whether the regular scheme or the composition scheme suits the way you sell.
  • The application in Form GST REG-01 on the GST portal, with the business details, the HSN or SAC codes for what you sell, and each document in the format the portal accepts.
  • Aadhaar authentication for the proprietor, partners or directors, and help booking the GST Suvidha Kendra appointment where the portal asks for biometric verification.
  • Replies to the officer's clarification notice in Form GST REG-04, with the documents asked for.
  • Additional places of business, and later amendments such as a new partner or director, a change of address or a new bank account.
  • After approval: the registration certificate downloaded, the bank account added if it was not given in the application, and the dates of your first returns set out.

Documents required

  • PAN of the business, or of the owner for a sole proprietorship.
  • PAN, Aadhaar, a photograph, mobile number and email of the proprietor, each partner or director, and the authorised signatory.
  • Proof of constitution: the partnership deed for a firm, the certificate of incorporation for a company, or the LLP agreement and incorporation certificate for an LLP.
  • Proof of the principal place of business: the latest electricity bill, property tax receipt or municipal document for premises you own.
  • For rented premises, the rent or lease agreement with the owner's proof of ownership. For premises used with the owner's consent, such as a relative's property, a consent letter with the owner's proof.
  • Bank account proof: a cancelled cheque, or the first page of the passbook or bank statement.
  • A letter of authorisation or board resolution naming the authorised signatory, and a class 3 digital signature for a company or LLP.

Typical timeline

The application is filed in two parts. Part A, with the PAN, mobile number and email verified by OTP, gives a temporary reference number. Once Part B goes in with the documents and Aadhaar authentication is done, the portal issues an application reference number (ARN) straight away. The rules then give the GST officer 7 working days to approve, or up to 30 days where Aadhaar authentication was not done or the officer decides the premises need a physical visit. If the officer raises a query, the reply is due within 7 working days, and the decision follows the reply. The time it takes depends mostly on complete documents and on the verification the officer asks for, so we check the documents before filing rather than after a query.

Why Ahmedabad businesses work with us

Our office is in Parswanath Chambers on Ashram Road, near the Income Tax circle. We work with businesses across Ahmedabad, and with businesses elsewhere in India when the work can be done online. Premises proof is a common reason for a query from the officer, so we look at the rent agreement, consent letter or electricity bill before the application goes in, and tell you what to keep ready if the officer asks to visit. Registration is only the start: once the GSTIN is issued, the same team can take on your GST return filing from the first tax period, along with your bookkeeping. The senior partner has more than 15 years of experience in accounting and tax, and the other partner more than five.

Frequently asked questions

Who has to register for GST in Ahmedabad?

In Gujarat, a business that supplies only goods must register once its aggregate turnover in a financial year crosses ₹40 lakh, and one that supplies services, or both goods and services, once it crosses ₹20 lakh. Aggregate turnover adds up taxable, exempt, export and inter-state supplies across India under the same PAN. The ₹40 lakh limit does not apply to some goods, such as ice cream, pan masala and tobacco products. Some businesses must register from the first sale whatever the turnover, including those making inter-state supplies of goods, casual taxable persons and most sellers of goods through e-commerce platforms. A business below the limit can still register voluntarily.

What are the GST registration fees in Ahmedabad?

The government charges no fee for GST registration. The application on the GST portal is free, and so is the registration certificate. What you pay a consultant for is the work around it: checking which registration you need, preparing the documents and answering any query from the officer. BalanceView quotes its charge on WhatsApp once we know your type of business and your premises.

Can I get GST registration with a virtual office in Ahmedabad?

Possibly, but it carries more risk than premises you actually use. The application asks for your principal place of business, the main place where you carry on business and keep your accounts, with proof that you can use it: an ownership document, a rent agreement, or a consent letter with the owner's proof. Virtual office and co-working providers often supply an agreement and a no objection certificate for this. The officer can still ask to verify the premises, and if your business cannot be shown to operate from the address, the application can be rejected or the registration suspended later. If you work from home, your home address with its electricity bill or property tax receipt is often the simpler choice. We look at the documents before you sign up for any office.

Can GST registration be done fully online?

The application, the documents and any reply to the officer are all filed on the GST portal, and the registration certificate is downloaded from it. The step that can need you in person is verification. Aadhaar authentication is usually done with an OTP, but in Gujarat the portal can instead ask an applicant to book an appointment at a GST Suvidha Kendra for biometric Aadhaar authentication and a photograph, with the original documents. The officer can also decide to visit the premises before approving.

What do I have to do once the GSTIN is issued?

Display the registration certificate at your principal place of business and at each additional place, and show your GSTIN on the name board at the entrance. If you did not give bank account details in the application, add them on the portal within 30 days of registration, or by the due date of your first GSTR-1 if that is earlier. From then on, issue GST invoices on taxable sales and file returns for every tax period, including nil returns in a month with no sales.

Ask on WhatsApp whether you need GST registration.

Tell us what you sell, where your buyers are and your turnover so far this year. We will tell you whether you need to register, what documents it takes and what we charge.
